Updated checklist of aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) on the plants of the orders Celastrales, Malpighiales, Oxalidales and Zygophyllales (Angiosperms: Eudicots: Fabids) of flowering plants in India
Abstract : The present checklist deals with the association of food plants belonging to the orders Celastrales, Malpighiales, Oxalidales and Zygophyllales (Fabiids: Eudicots: Angiosperms) with the aphids (Homiptera: Aphididae) in India. The Celastrales is represented by its type family Celastaceae in India and only 2 species are associated with 6 species of aphids. Amongst the 36 families of the order Malpighiales, only 9 families of plants (Calophyllaceae, Clusiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Hypericaceae, Linaceae, Passifloraceae, Phyllanthaceae, Salicaceae, and Violaceae) are associated with aphids in India. Among these 9 families, 664 species of plants belonging to 100 genera are associated with 103 species of aphids under 51 genera. Aphis (Aphis) gossypii Glover is highly polyphagous infesting 20 species of Malpighiales. The species of Schoutedenia Rübsaamen are mostly associated with plants of Phyllanthaceae while species of Chaitophorus Koch, Cavariella Del Guercio and Pemphigus Hartig are mostly associated with the plants of Salicaceae. The Oxalidales is represented by two families in India, Elaeocarpaceae and Oxalidaceae. Only 2 species of Elaeocarpaceae and 3 species of Oxalidaceae are associated with 2 and 11 species of aphids, respectively. The Zygophllaceae is the only family of the order Zygophyllales in India, of which a single species is associated with a single species of aphid.
