The study of activity time budgeting for the Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) in captivity

Abstract : Animal behavior encompasses a spectrum of actions and responses driven by genetic, neural, hormonal, and environmental influences, which collectively adapt to enhance survival and reproductive success. In captivity, animals often face environments that diverge substantially from their natural habitats, potentially resulting in behavioral abnormalities that may indicate compromised well-being. This study focuses on the Western hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock), a frugivorous and socially monogamous primate native to Northeast India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. This study addresses this gap by examining behavioral patterns of a captive Western hoolock gibbon to establish a baseline for future comparative and longitudinal research. Findings are intended to contribute to evidence-based strategies for enhancing the welfare and management of captive gibbons, promoting the expression of natural behaviors, and improving overall health and well-being in zoo environments.
