Survey report on the current status of ericulture in the Kokrajhar district of Assam
Abstract : Sericulture is recognized as an integral part of the culture and tradition of the Indian society and it is one of the oldest cottage as well as agro-based industry in the world. India is the only country in the world to be able to produce all the four varieties of the natural silk. The people of the Northeastern part of India has been practicing sericulture since a very long time. Assam leads the silk production in the country and sericulture has been a part of cultural ethos and tradition since time immemorial. The present study was conducted in six villages of Kokrajhar district of BTC, Assam. It was found that the villagers are actively involved in Ericulture which provides income and employment opportunities for the local people. The people were found to rear silkworm for the production silk as well as for the larva which is consumed as a delicacy. The number of rearers varies during each season and temperature also tends to play a major part in the growth and development of the silkworm. An attempt was also made to study the variety of food plants used by the local rearers. The involvement of women in sericulture was found to be comparable to men and it is helping in generating income and employment to the poor people of the area.
