Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the reptiles (Testudines: Lacertidae: Ophidia) of the Lesser Caucasus within Azerbaijan

Abstract : This study provides an overview of the distribution and population dynamics of various reptile species within the Lesser Caucasus, specifically in Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The research highlights the rich biodiversity of the region, identifying key species in different ecological zones such as lowlands, foothills, and mid-mountain areas. Field surveys conducted between 2019 and 2024 provided new data on the distribution of various species, including of three Critically Endangered and Endangered lizards (Phrynocephalus horvathi, Eremias pleskei, Darevskia rostombekovi). The findings suggest that the herpetofauna of Azerbaijan and the surrounding areas is undergoing significant changes due to both natural and anthropogenic factors, which have implications for future conservation efforts.
