Protecting urban ecosystem of ooty: The case of street dogs and community safety

Abstract : The night of September 14, 2023, in Ooty witnessed a horrifying incident involving 15 street dogs attacking a defenseless foal in the heart of the city. This event has raised concerns about the safety of both residents and animals in the urban environment. Such incidents are a result of the natural carnivorous behavior exhibited by free-roaming dogs when not properly managed. This incident highlights the urgent need for improved animal control and welfare programs, including spaying/neutering, vaccination, and rehabilitation of street dogs. It also calls for a collaborative effort between city authorities and animal welfare organizations to promote responsible pet ownership and ensure the coexistence of humans and animals in Ooty. This disturbing event underscores the importance of proactive measures to address the issue of street dogs in urban areas and protect both the community and the vulnerable animals in the city.
