Parasite fauna of sheep (Ovis aries) in Azerbaijan
Abstract : The purpose of our research was to study the parasitic fauna of sheep with parasites in the northern region of the Republic of Azerbaijan and conduct a comparative analysis with data from literature sources. The materials for parasitological laboratory studies were sheep feces taken from 106 sheep from spring to summer of 2024. The following species of coccidia were found in sheep feces – Eimeria bakuensis, E. crandalis, E. faurei, E. ovinoidalis, E. ahsata, E. parva, E. intricata, E. granulosa. One species of the genus Cryptosporidium was discovered - Cryptosporidium sp. and one species of the genus Isospora - Isospora sp., sarcocystis belonging to the species S. gigantea were found in the esophagus and eggs of helminths of the genus Trichostrongylus – Trichostrongylus sp. were found in sheep feces. In blood samples of animals taken for testing for blood parasites, the species Theileria sp. was found in lymphocytes in the schizogony stage. The species ratio of sheep parasite species we discovered varies from 3 to 12; monoinvasions were rarely recorded during our research. This study is the first report on the prevalence of blood parasites infecting sheep in in the northern regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
