Oviposition behavior of Agriocnemis pygmaea (Rambur, 1842) in Sri Sathiya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract : This study documents the oviposition behavior of Agriocnemis pygmaea (Rambur, 1842), a damselfly species widely distributed in southern Asia. Observations were conducted in the Nambula Pulakunta region of the Sri Sathyasai district in Andhra Pradesh, focusing on a stream near Dhaniyanchiru village. Females were observed selecting aquatic vegetation as oviposition sites, submerging underwater to deposit eggs using their ovipositor, while males displayed protective male-guarding behaviors. The study also recorded co-occurring odonate species and highlights the cooperative dynamic between sexes during reproduction. These findings contribute to understanding the reproductive ecology of A. pygmaea and underscore the importance of suitable habitats fort he species’ conservation. Further research is recommended to explore male-female communication and its influence on reproductive success.
