Molecular diversity between two indigenous silkworm races of Bombyx mori L.

Abstract :

Nistari and Pure Mysore are two indigenous silkworm races that are well adapted to the tropical climatic conditions of India. Nistari is a local race of West Bengal that is widely reared in Eastern and North-eastern states of India. Likewise, Pure Mysore is a local race of Karnataka widely reared in Southern states of India. The aim of this study was to identify and understand the molecular differences between Nistari and Pure Mysore. To do so, 40 microsatellite markers were used to analyse molecular diversity between Nistari and Pure Mysore. Out of them, 15 were polymorphic with a polymorphism percentage of 37.5%. Totally, 60 alleles were generated, of which 31 alleles were monomorphic between Nistari and Pure Mysore. Only nine (22.5%) markers were able to generate alleles in heterozygous condition. Furthermore, the mean of observed heterozygosity was less than that of expected heterozygosity. Genetic similarity between Nistari and Pure Mysore was 0.78. These results indicate that most of the genomic regions between Nistari and Pure Mysore are conserved. The loss of heterozygosity in these geographically distanced races makes an alarm to take the preventive measures for their conservation and protection in order to retain their characters like high survival under tropical climatic conditions.
