Forensic entomology: A comprehensive review on insect-based approaches in criminal forensics

Abstract : Forensic entomology is a specialized field within forensic science that utilizes insect evidence to aid in criminal investigations. These insects that inhabit a deceased body can serve as potential indicators to determine the time of death, which is commonly referred to as the postmortem interval (PMI). Over the years, significant advancements in the understanding of insect biology, behavior, life cycle and their role in post-mortem decomposition have revolutionized the forensic investigation process. This comprehensive review article explores the fundamental concepts, historical backgrounds, stages of decomposition and advance technique such as DNA barcoding technique, gene expression aided PMI estimation and practical applications of forensic entomology. This review article also discusses the various challenges and limitations associated with this evolving field.
