Feeding preferences of Turkish members of the genus Clytus Laicharting (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae) with new host plants
Abstract : The detection of cerambycids and their feeding preferences within the natural ecosystems is of great ecological and economic importance. Accordingly, the paper presents all taxa of Turkish Clytus with new data on their feeding preferences and distribution patterns for the first time collectively. The available specimens were collected from various localities in Turkey between April and September in 1989¬-2023. It is determined that Turkish Clytus includes fourteen species-group taxa of five subgenera. New host plants of Clytus schneideri inapicalis Pic and Clytus schurmanni Sama of which host plants were never known previously, are determined for the first time as Fagaceae (Quercus sp.). In addition, the host range of three species-group taxa is expanded by determining some new hosts for them as Aquifoliaceae (Ilex aquifolium Linnaeus), Fabaceae (Cytisus sp. and Robinia pseudoacacia Linnaeus) and Styracaceae (Styrax officinalis Linnaeus) for Clytus rhamni temesiensis (Germar), Rosaceae (Cydonia oblonga Miller) for Clytus arietis arietis (Linnaeus), and Moraceae (Ficus carica Linnaeus) for Clytus taurusiensis Pic. According to the present study, most species are found monophagous and they are strongly preferred deciduous trees and shrubs. Most of taxa feed deciduous trees and shrubs, while only one taxon also feeds with coniferous trees. Among deciduous trees, the members of Fagaceae with six longicorns are found the most preferred plant family as host, followed by Moraceae with four taxa. On the other side, the known data on the distribution of some species in Turkey has been improved with new provincial and regional records.
