Evaluating the insecticidal and repellent activities of different plant extracts against the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hompotera: Aleyrodidae) in Kashmir

Abstract :

Insecticidal and repellent activities of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of six plants collected from Kashmir valley were studied against adult whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. The adult whiteflies were exposed to four different concentrations viz., 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0% of each plant extract in both the experiments. All extracts assessed in the current study showed higher to moderate effects depending on the concentrations and solvents used. The maximum mortality and repellent activity of 85.83 & 72.50% and 86.67 & 80.00% was exhibited by ethanolic & aqueous extracts of Euphorbia helioscopia at 5.0% concentration. Whereas, least mortality and repellent activity of 46.67 & 37.50% and 36.67 & 33.33% was paraded by ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Berberis lycium at 5.0% concentration. It was also observed that the ethanolic extracts were most effective than their aqueous extracts in the present study. This is an optimal eco-friendly approach for pest management programmes.
