Eco behavioural study of the common grey langur in nearby areas of Girnar forest in Junagadh
Abstract : This investigation was done to study and understand eco-behaviour, social behaviour and effect of provisioning in langur. The common grey langur is commonly found colobine species in India and all over Gujarat also. Behaviour of grey langur was studied and study revealed that langur spent their majority time in the resting, feeding, and sitting activity. All the behavioural activities are varied in many different ways like age-sex wise, season-wise, study area-wise and month-wise, which calls for the long term and further investigation of langur for better understanding the behaviour. Social behavioural activity was also understood by analysing the focal animal behavioural data which elicits a brief idea about the social organization and the relationships among troop members. These activities would be better understood by studying the factors affecting them and comparative analysis. Other aspects like substrate utilization and positional behaviour in locomotion was studied for understanding the affecting habit of the behaviour in langurs. In this investigation’s area, much amount of man made feeding-provisioning was observed which requires more attention to study the behaviour changes in basic behaviour of langur like foraging. Short term and aggressive behavioural changes were observed during the provisioning. So, we can say that the “urban wildlife syndrome” was spreading in the langurs of Junagadh. But to prove this, much further investigation and study of langur was required.
