Aerial symphony at water dam; an annotated checklist of bird diversity of Baliyawad dam, Junagadh, Gujarat, India

Abstract : Monitoring birds is very essential to understand the health of the ecosystem and allows us to assess pre- and post-change impact. Bird plays a very important function in the ecosystem, hence need to observe, monitor and assess the diversity of particular locality. Here we prepared the checklist of the Baliyawad water dam, Junagadh, Gujarat. We recorded a total of 83 species of bird belonging to 38 families, of which 42% of families of birds were found in Gujarat. The high number of bird species could be due to the mosaic of habitat surrounding the water dam. Five near-threatened and one vulnerable species were also observed, which indicates the importance of the water dam as a habitat for a diverse group of birds. However, this dam faces an immediate threat from the surrounding human population. This study provides the preliminary list, however important to plan a new long-term study in the future. We further stress to study of deep dynamics of bird species assemblage, how changes in the physio-chemical parameter of water influence the bird composition, and how different anthropogenic gradients influence the distribution.
