A study on setae morphology of two genera of ground spiders (Araneae: Gnaphosidae)

Abstract : The outer part of spiders' bodies is covered with hair-like structures called setae. It is known that these structures differ at genus level in ground spiders. In this study, setae morphology of four ground spider species belonging to two genera were studied. The morphology of the setae on the abdomen and cephalothorax of Micaria albovittata (Lucas, 1846), Micaria formicaria (Sundevall, 1831), Nomisia conigera (Spassky, 1941) and Nomisia ripariensis (O.P.-Cambridge, 1872) were determined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Squamose type setae were observed in species belonging to the Micaria genus and plumose type setae were observed in species belonging to the genus Nomisia. The setae morphology of the species was presented for the first time with this study.
