A review of Coccinelidae diversity (Insecta: Coleoptera) in India
Abstract : Coccinellidae, which refers to the round and convex body form of the beetles, is derived from the Latin Greek term "Kokkos," which meaning berry or seed. Most ladybirds have vibrant colours and distinctive patterns of spots or markings. Coccinellidae is the largest family of order Coleoptera, super family Cucujoidea and family Coccinellidae and its members are commonly known as ladybird beetles, ladybugs or Coccinellid beetles. The only species that are effective in reducing pest populations through predatory behaviour is the ladybug or ladybird (family Coccinellidae). They are potential predators of aphids, scale insect, mealybugs and mite pest. The diversity of predacious Coccinellids is of great practical and scientific importance due to their worldwide utilization as natural enemy of phytophagous insect pests. The aim of this paper is to review the work done by many workers on the diversity and distribution of Coccinellidae.
