A Critical review on biochemical and therapeutic properties of honey produced by honeybees

Abstract : The world is dealing with an exceptional rise in the number of people of middle age and old age suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, several acute respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancer etc. due to the unhealthy lifestyle, absence of physical activities, and the dependency on highly refined food products. As per the WHO reports, India is among one of the nations that are currently dealing with the maximum number of lifestyle related disorders with an alarming situation as it is already considered as the diabetes capital of the world. With this rise of concern, people are becoming more aware of the ill effects of processed food items, and are trying to shift towards a healthy lifestyle, consuming natural food items, traditional medicines, involvement in physical activities etc. Amidst all the disorders diabetes is one of the major concerning health problems as it not only increases the blood sugar level but is also correlated to the several other health ailments. The continual use of the table sugar in daily diet is one of the major reasons behind the surge in the prevalent diabetes not only in the middle aged or old aged people but also among the children and perhaps, people are looking for its alternatives by incorporating sugar free sweeteners in their diets. Meanwhile, the humans have also realized the significance of honey over the past few decades due to its exceptional health value and its demand is increasing constantly as it is the only sweetener that directly comes from nature, doesn’t require any processing or refining, and can be stored for years without fear of spoilage. Clinical research has shown that honey intake, as opposed to other sweeteners, lowers glucose blood levels in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes by reducing the postprandial glycemic response in both diabetic and non-diabetic persons. Honey along with anti-diabetic is also endowed with anti- microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancerous properties which makes it a priority for not only diabetic patients but everyone. The anti-microbial properties of honey help to cure several acute respiratory problems like cough, sore throat etc. All these properties and health benefits make honey extremely valuable product in the market. Keeping the importance of honey in mind, this article has been structured to describe the Biochemical and Therapeutic Properties of Medicated Honey.
